Space Needs Analysis

Objective: Review the strategic plan, mission, and goals of the University; analyze academic space needs to provide a sense of where each major unit stands in relationship to recognized space guidelines at current and proposed activity levels; assessment of reallocation needs analyzing unit adjacencies, needs, proposed locations and amounts of space for proposed moves that will occur as the comprehensive capital program is implemented; and develop a space needs forecasting model for use by the University to continually refine and update the space analysis in the future.

Process: Meet with campus administration, project planning committees, and representatives of each of the colleges and schools and academic support units. Using the information gathered from these meetings and from accepted space standards provide an overview of major space types campuswide and how they compare to normative expectations for an institution of this mix and mission. Appropriate facilities guidelines will be applied to identify normative amounts of classroom, teaching laboratory, open laboratory, research, faculty office, and other types of space needed by the academic units. Office space for administrative units will also be compared to normative expectations.

Overview guidelines for general support functions, such as physical plant operations or for student auxiliary facilities, such as student centers and housing, will be utilized.

The comparison of guideline space needs to existing space will be used to perform a space needs by precinct study that will develop master plan level alternatives for realignment of programs to meet those needs either within existing facilities, through a reallocation plan, or through the recommendation for construction of new facilities.

The space needs by precinct study will prepare a summary of current and projected space assignments, proposed adjacencies, and list moves and expected sequence for the implementation of the various capital construction projects and the filling of the spaces being vacated. The goal of the space needs by precinct study is to provide recommendations for effective precinct level adjacencies for the activities and departments of the University of Arizona and provide recommendations for remodels, renovations, or new construction needed to implement the adjacencies.
