The Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC) Area Plan represents the efforts of many indi- viduals who analyzed the problems and the opportunities, as well as those individuals who read and criticized the proposals, and those who recognized the need for the Health Sciences Center to define its own future. Special thanks goes to those members of the Task Force representing the various entities--the College of Medicine, Andreas M. Goldner and Vincent A. Fulginiti; University Medical Center, Ernest P. Schloss and Diane Gillmen; University Physicians, Inc., Jeff Wasserman; College of Nursing, Claire Parsons; College of Pharmacy, Dick Wiedhopf; and the School of Health Related Professions, Charles Tipton. Special thanks also goes to the project coordinators -- Diane Hillman of University Medical Center and Michael Haggans, Associate Vice President, Facilities. Credit is due to many on the staff of the Facilities Design and Construction, and Physical resources, who contributed logistically and intellectually to this undertaking; to the staff of the Department of Community and Public Service, in particular Bruce Wright, Director, for his tireless efforts during the public review phase of the AHSC planning process; and to David Duffy, University Campus Planner, and other staff of Capital Facilities Planning, for review, revision, and document production efforts. None of this could have been done without the assistance and support of James E. Dalen, Dean, College of Medicine, and Keith Waterbrook, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital. The Plan, which was produced through the effort of so many, is neither a static document nor a construction blueprint. Rather, it is a flexible guideline for the orderly development of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. The plan will be reviewed and updated over time to meet changing environments, new missions, and revised strategic goals.
