Campus Planning Overview

Department of Campus and Facilities Planning (CFP)
CFP Mission, Functions, and Services

The mission of the Department of Campus and Facilities Planning is to provide the University of Arizona with efficient, customer-oriented, professional planning services in support of the short- and long-range development of the campus physical and spatial environment.

The University of Arizona has an estimated daytime campus population approaching 50,000, and a population density greater than many of our urban centers. Like cities, the University has a need for a planning department to help ensure that its future growth and development is orderly, attractive, and well-planned.

The Department of Campus and Facilities Planning (CFP) is the primary provider of campus and facilities planning services for a wide range of University of Arizona "customers." These services include activities that fall within two general areas of emphasis. They are:

    1. campus physical planning (land planning, locating new buildings, transportation, open space, pedestrian circulation, historic preservation, etc.); and,

    2. capital facilities planning, programming, and budgeting.

These activities are appropriately integrated with other institutional planning functions (e.g., strategic planning), and implement University plans relating to the physical development and organization of campus and off-campus properties.

Campus and Facilities Planning provides services in the following areas:

    • Capital planning and budgeting
    • Facilities programming
    • Campus planning
    • Urban planning and design
    • Environmental planning
    • Architecture
    • Landscape architecture
    • Historic preservation
    • Transportation planning
    • Wayfinding/signage

Have a question about a building proposed in the University's Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan, or how it got there in the first place? Need help generating some ideas on how to improve the open space adjacent to your department? Wondering what the University's future land development plans are? Give us a call at (520) 621-1099 for answers to these and other questions from the friendly, professional staff at Campus and Facilities Planning. If we can't assist you, we'll put you in touch with someone who can!

CFP can also assist you in your other planning needs. For example, you might have thought about the possibility of adding on to a building in order to address a departmental space need. Or, your federal grant application might require a Development Impact Review (DIR). CFP's planning staff is ready to assist you in meeting your planning or information needs.

CFP is committed to providing:

    • "In-house" consulting services for University customers
    • Easy access to a variety of professional planning services
    • Customer service expertise

Consulting services include innovative land and advance project planning to improve the quality and function of the developing University campus. CFP also provides preparation or evaluation of preliminary project development concepts; facilities programming; support of project or process improvement teams; assessment of alternative future "visions" of the University physical campus; and, the practical application of campus land planning principles. CFP works closely with other design disciplines and academic units to insure the development of high quality campus plans and projects.

Call Campus and Facilities Planning at (520) 621-1099 to see how CFP can assist your planning efforts.
